Hi, I’m Sam. I’m 6 years old. I live with my mom and dad, but sometimes they don’t get along. They argue a lot, and it makes everyone sad. One day, I heard my mom say “divorce,” and I didn’t know what that meant. I asked her if I could still see my dad, and she said yes, but I felt scared.

I learned that lots of kids like me have parents who aren’t together. My teacher told me that kids are hurt or treated badly when their parents are getting divorced or already are. Maybe that’s why things are tough right now.

I wish things were like before, when everyone was happy and laughed together. But now, I try to be brave and hope my mom and dad can be happy again, even if it’s different.”

In 60 percent of reported child abuse cases the parents are divorced or there is an impending divorce/breakup.
